Danone Nations Cup 2006
The search is on to find the country’s finest footballing talent for International Final in France
The 6th International Danone Nations Cup is about to launch again in the UK and will this year be sponsored by Actimel. The event will offer some of England’s finest young footballing talent the opportunity to compete with the very best from around the world on a global stage.
Starting in March, the UK launch will be kicked off by the Chelsea and England star Joe Cole before the real business starts of finding the best boys and girls aged between 10 and 12 that this country has to offer. The final squad of player's chosen will eventually go forward to represent England against the likes of Brazil, Argentina, France and the old rivals Germany.
The first stage of the Danone Nations Cup is the regional trials and these will take place across the country at the following locations. Qualified football coaches will select the best young players from each of these regions:
- Newcastle 20th May Northumbria University, Newcastle-Upon-Tyne
- Leeds 21st May Leeds University, West Park Ringhead, West Park
- Manchester 27th May William Hulme's Grammar School, Manchester
- Liverpool 28th May Walton Sports Centre, Liverpool
- Birmingham 30th May University of Central England, Birmingham
- Bristol 1st June University of Bristol, Coombe Dingle, Bristol
- London (North) 3rd June Saint Aloysius Playing Field, Highgate, London
- London (South) 4th June Dulwich College, London
The top players from these regional trials will be chosen to attend a training day where they will be split into teams for the UK final. This will be held at Crystal Palace National Sports Centre over the weekend of 10th and 11th June. The teams will be under the guidance of professional football coaches and will play in a knockout style competition to find the best young team in England. The winning team will then go forward to represent England at the International Finals in September held at the Stade de Gerland in Lyon.
"I'm very pleased and honoured to be the UK Ambassador for the Danone Nations Cup 2006 campaign. I feel that a tournament of this size and calibre will give any child the confidence and kind of experience that will hopefully lead them to playing professionally later on in life. I'd like to think that the England stars of tomorrow will be helped by attending events such as the Danone Nations Cup and I would have given anything to be playing against the likes of Brazil, Germany and Italy when I was 10 years old"
Joe Cole, Official UK Ambassador for the Danone Nations Cup
Now in its 6th year, the International Danone Nations Cup has a track record of attracting some of the best young footballing talent from around the world. This year’s competition will involve teams from 32 countries as they all compete for the chance to be crowned champions at the final in Lyon at the Stade de Gerland on 3rd September in front of 30,000 spectators.
The project is supported by Zinedine Zidane and is sponsored and created by Danone. Anyone wishing to sign up for the regional trials should visit www.danonecup.co.uk
